Character Name: Right Suzuki
Character Canon: Ressha Sentai ToQger
History: The series history/info can be found here, with more detailed episode summaries located here. Right's personal history is located right here!
AU History: Right was born and raised in Union as the oldest of three kids in a working-middle-class family. His father worked as an employee of Happy-Me Pharmacy, while his mother stayed home to raise him and his brother and sister. His grandfather, Tsuyoshi Suzuki, was a retired Trainer who taught Right and his siblings the basics of survival, in case they ever had to travel outside the city walls for any reason. Right took great interest in the aspects related to food, due to his nigh-endless appetite. So great was his appetite at times growing up that he'd been known to eat Poffins and other Pokemon treats, which has led some kids into calling him a Snorlax Shifter.
Right had always been able to understand Pokemon since he was little. Because of this, he grew up believing that "people" include both humans and Pokemon, and it is "people" that he wants to help out, as his family and elders have always taught him to do. Unfortunately, this meant that he would get into occasional scuffles with bullies. Sometimes, these scuffles happen out in public, which in turn got him into trouble a few times with either a member of the Guard or one of the Swords of the Savior, depending upon who came across him during such times. Most of the scuffles were caused by two things: either someone was being mean to a friend of his, or they were messing with someone's food.
He also always had an overactive imagination as well. Even into his adolescence years, he still did childish things such as "play-pretend" and "dress-up", his playful antics leaning towards the dramatic side. The elders had tried to channel such antics into a more productive role in society, such as clothing design. However, Right chose instead to go into theater, figuring that if he can make hard-working people enjoy the arts with a smile, then he's definitely helping them make their day better. He also felt that, since times were relatively peaceful, he could do so while entrusting the general safety of Union to the combined efforts of the Rangers, the Guard, and the Swords.
That way of thinking has changed in the previous year, though. Right was given a huge slap of reality during the Great Quake last year, when he saw just how many Pokemon in the Residential District alone were greatly hurt, both by falling debris and by the rampaging hordes of wild Pokemon. But his hope didn't diminish very much, if at all, and he tried to help as much as he could by at least talking some injured Pokemon into going to the Medical Center. It was during that crisis that he came across a tiny, wounded Lillipup that was abandoned in some overturned wagon. He took it in and nursed it back to health. In return, the Lillipup bonded with him and has been his constant companion ever since.. He named her Wagon and spoiled her sweet, dressing her up in pretty clothes and getting her as many Poffins as he could afford.
When Union had to take in many Caldera refugees later that summer, Right did the best he could to help in small ways. Usually, he ended up helping by passing around food and water among the refugees, or playing with little Calderan kids and help make them feel happy and safe in Union. It was with such contact that he learned of how terrible war was: kids who lost their parents in battle, humans and Pokemon who lost their partners, and the very idea that Gigas would go so far as to starve people in order to make them surrender... While Right's passion for justice had only simmered in the face of bullies, it fanned out into white-hot flames upon hearing all the horrible things Gigas has done. He truly wanted to go out there and fight the Gigas soldiers - not only for their war crimes, but also for the whole using Pokeballs thing. His parents managed to talk him out of getting involved on the war front itself, but he still had that itch to go out there and beat up on Gigas.
It was his grandfather who eventually offered a compromise - mainly to help calm the boy down. Since Right was already part of a lesser-known theater group as of March of that year, Grandfather offered to teach Right and his Pokemon the basics of fighting after he completes his one-year contract with that group. Because Grandfather was a retired Trainer himself, Right accepted that offer.
With the Caldera war now over for several months now, and his contract just being completed, Right's starting to train with his grandpa while looking for a new theater group to switch to. He's not quite as gun-ho about heading outside of Union as he was in the previous summer, and his inner sense of Justice has quieted down...but the wanderlust and those senses are still there in the back of his mind, ready to flare back up under the right situation.
Canon Personality: Right is an energetic young man who always faces forward on his path of life. He doesn't like sitting still when he feels that something needs to be done, and he gets very antsy about being stuck in cramped places. With so much energy within him, he's willing to do anything and everything that appears to be fun and exciting, like going on all the rides at an amusement park. A natural optimistic, he almost always doesn't let any bad situations get him down for very long. And due to his "glass half-full" outlook on life combined with his friendliness, he tends to inspire hope and a similar optimism in everyone around him. He especially enjoys hanging around with children, since their sense of fun matches his very well.
For all of his fun-loving antics, though, he does take being a ToQger seriously. He gets how important it is to protect everyone from evil beings such as the Shadow Line, and will gladly run head-first into any fight with those monsters. Because he's got the strongest Imagination of his team, he's usually one of the more reliable fighters on the battlefield. Not only is he very strong and capable of taking down a lot of foes, but he also is quick to think on his feet. He's also very loyal to his friends and teammates, and will always put his life on the line in order to save them, along with any innocent people caught up in the fight. He has even admitted at one point that he's the kind of "idiot hero" that would never turn his back on anyone that needs help - even if it ends up being a trap.
However, one the first things one may notice upon meeting Right is his appetite. He's almost always hungry, and one of the first things he does in any new town is to check out all the delicious local foods that said town may offer. He's not picky with his selections, either - all types and flavors of food are well loved by him. If he gets hungry for too long, it does impact his sense of judgement. Once, he got so hungry that he confessed to a crime he didn't commit just so he could get a hot meal in his belly. Food is so important to him that if he sees anyone messing with another person's food - or worse, take someone's food away from them, he will kick their ass for it. If he's angry enough, he will go as far as tying up the perpetrator and eating something right in front of them, just to make them understand what their victims felt like. Some may see it as childish; other view it as a food grudge. In Right's case, it's a bit of both. Food isn't the only important thing to Right, of course. He can put his hunger aside when there's something more important to deal with, such as helping people and fighting Shadows. It just doesn't stop him from grumbling about it.
His friends and teammates are also very important to him. Because he and his fellow core team members didn't remember where they came from or their families for several months, his friends became a second family to him - and quite literally, all he had for the longest time. He'll never abandon his friends when they need him, and he trusts them to do what they need to do when they need to do it, while he goes off to do his own thing when he needs to do it. He does act like the default leader at times. He's usually the one to come up with ideas for any Imagination-based group attacks. He's often the one to go solo in order to buy time for his teammates, and he tends to be the one that fights many of the Shadow Bosses, especially the Emperor of Darkness Zed later on. However, when the matter was brought up at one point, Right would state that the team really doesn't have a set leader - everyone takes a turn at the leadership role when they need to. In truth, Right only seems himself as the "lunch leader" of his group - fitting, considering his love of food.
That doesn't mean that he's the perfect friend, though. Right's way of saying things have been known to be unintentionally blunt at times. And what he says or do can sometimes go to the point of being hurtful or insulting. A good example is that he once squirted some milk into the fact of a friend by accident...but thought it was funny and laughed in his face about it. Part of that, sadly, comes from the fact that Right tends to be clueless as to how others might handle what he says or do. He is not the most attentive person in regards to other people's feelings or actions, unless there's something immensely important or life-threatening going on. In short, he's a bit of a ditz. He is also far too trusting for his own good, believe that any friend or apparent good guy would never truly harm or betray him. And the one time a close friend did betray them, though, Right never really stopped trusting him, believing that there was a good reason for why said friend did what he did. Finally, his way of helping someone doesn't always work the way he thinks it will. For example, Right tried to get their teammate Akira to laugh, back when the latter had recently joined the group. So, he talked his fellow teammates into cross-dressing into other characters and act as ridiculous as they could. Right himself cross-dressed into a ballerina princess. Unfortunately, Akira didn't so much as crack the smallest of smiles, much to Right's disappointment.
AU Deviation: Obviously, Right isn't going to be a ToQger in this AU; nor are there any trains for him to use, magical or otherwise. There's no pressing need to be in a "we need to save the world" mindset (yet, I assume). Right will also have grown up normally in this AU, with his family and town being relatively untouched by an evil forces of darkness, and with all of his memories intact.
Right will essentially be a regular young Enlightened adult. He'll be more sure of his self identity, and much more content with his overall situation as well. He's not missing any important memories; his family's okay; and he has plenty of people to be friends with. Furthermore, his hometown is relatively safe, being well-guarded by the Rangers, the Swords, and the Guard. Because of his Union upbringing, he is aware of how dangerous things can be - especially considering the events of the previous year. Unlike his canon self, there's no urgent need to go outside of Union to search for anything other than a Pokemon friend or three. Everything he needs is more or less at his fingertips, if not just a paycheck or two away. While he still has a good sense of right versus wrong, he hasn't been pushed to do anything more than beat up bullies for much of his current life.
The exceptions to that last part, though, are in regards to Team Evolution and Gigas. As a Union native, he is extremely disturbed by the fact that there's still people out there using PokeBalls - the very thing that enslaved Pokemon before the great war 500 years ago. He also doesn't like the idea of people viewing Pokemon as more like tools and servants, when he himself view them as friends and fellow "people". But Gigas, he hates more than Team Evolution. It was Gigas who attacked and attempted to starve Caldera into submission. And, from what's been talked about on the streets and over the radio announcements, it was Gigas who turned those poor people into the Enhanced against their will, and completely messed their heads up as a result. Unfortunately, one cannot go up to a city and beat it down like one could with a Shadow Monster, no matter how much Imagination he could wield - either by himself, or shared between people.
Still, the potential is there for him to go out and get involved with recent events. And he really, really wants to help everyone that's ever been hurt from recent events - especially any Calderans and Enhanced folks. Also, because he was raised with knowledge of the Savior story, Right does revere and admire both the Savior and the Gods. However, he's not worried about the idea of the gods returning to be a bad thing. In fact, he actually would very much like to personally meet one of them one day - on peaceful terms, of course.
In short, all Right needs is someone to push him into the right direction - either by going on trips outside of union with him, or encouraging him to join certain groups that are likely to be defending people against the "evils" of Gigas and Team Evolution.
Canon Abilities: (There will be a few mentions of the Rainbow Line and the Shadow Line. The former is the railroad group that wants to keep the world full of Light and Imagination, while the latter is an Evil Railroad Organization bent on covering the world in Darkness. Also, I will warn that, going forward, there will be some spoilers for the final arc of his series.)
Right's main power is his immense Imagination. Imagination is what fuels all Rainbow Line equipment, from the weapons to the trains themselves. Imagination is also what allows Right and his fellow ToQgers to fight against the Shadow Line. Right's got the strongest Imagination of the group, meaning that whatever he comes up with in his head, he will be able to make it happen. Imagination is that sense of belief in one's self in being able to visualize the outcome of what you wanna do, and then being able to make it happen just the way you want it to. For example, when he imagines how a fight scene plays out, he usually sees himself winning in the end; and 9 times out of 10, he's able to make it happen in reality just the way he imagined it to be. Another example is that Right makes himself believe that a strong attack isn't that strong, or he can pretend that whatever pain he's feeling isn't there for a few moments. He can even use his Imagination to make himself believe that he's stronger than he normally is, or run faster than he normally could, or jump higher that he normally would. And much of that is before he puts on the magic spandex suit.
However, there are drawbacks to using Imagination in such a way. His body is still very much that of a normal human, and even with all the pretending that he's not feeling any pain, it doesn't change the fact that he still got hurt in the first place. He can only make himself pretend to do more than his body can normally do for a short amount of time - only a few minutes at a time. Otherwise, the strain will become too much for his body to handle. Also, if he gets too hungry, it makes it hard for him to focus his Imagination enough to do what he wants to do. Finally, like most things in life, what he imagines how things would do doesn't quite work out the same way sometimes - like, thinking he can kick a physically strong person's ass when said person is very, very strong and Right's punches aren't very effective.
As for the actual equipment he uses, he usually carries a transformation brace that's designed to look like a railroad crossing, tracks and all. Right also carries the handheld version of the Red Train (termed 'Ressha'), which he inserts into the brace in order to transform. This creates the red ToQ #1 suit to form on his person, giving him the following boosts: better Defense, stronger Attack, and faster Speed. His Imagination is also more effective in battle as ToQ #1, allowing him to do more in this heroic form than in his civilian form. His personal weapon is the Rail Slasher - a railroad-based sword that can extend out as magical rails to wrap around his target and immobilizing it. But he also has the standard-issue blaster, which can shift into a second blade for him to wield. Plus, he and his teammates have the unique ability to transfer their trains into each other's braces, thus allowing them to switch colors and personal weapons. Right is (in)famous for doing this the most often. Finally, Right and his teammates do get the Hyper Train midway through the series, which grants one ToQger (or the rare occasion of two) golden upper-body armor shaped like a golden train, plus a major boost in all abilities. In the Hyper Train form, Right can use a very unique cannon that channels the power of several Trains at once through one super-powerful shot. This has been strong enough to take down some mook Mechas by itself!
Like every Sentai and Power Ranger series, Right does have his own mecha to use. In this case, it is the Red Train itself, which is normally the main engine car of the Rainbow Line. It can shoot laser beams at any enemies, and can produce its own magical tracks in order to "fly" through the air as needed. By combining with the other four main Rainbow Line Trains (Blue, Yellow, Pink, and Green), it becomes the middle portion of their main super mecha, ToQ-Oh, which the entire team pilots together. All the trains are piloted exactly the way the ToQgers imagine them to, because as stated before, the trains run purely on Imagination. ToQ-Oh is the base for many of the other mecha combinations, such as Chou-ToQ-Oh, Chou-Chou-ToQ-Dai-Oh, and ToQ-Rainbow, the final (and largest) mecha combo.
During the final several episodes of his series, though, it is revealed that Right had ended up being touched by Darkness first among this team. The method of this reveal was when he started emitting the same kind of Darkness that matched that of the Big Bad of the series, the Emperor of Darkness Zed. Right actually ran into Zed first, and ended up getting some of the latter's darkness buried within him, just before the start of the series. Because of that, he eventually ends up as Black ToQ #1, wielding the Power of Darkness. He could send it out in pulse waves, much like Zed could, and it also gives him the power to fight Zed toe-to-toe in the latter's final form. However, Right did run the risk of not being remembered by anyone that ever knew him. Plus, had his friends not saved him from it during the finale, Right was at high risk of being swallowed up by the darkness within himself. Thankfully, this was dispelled by unlocking his inner light, allowing him to take the form of ToQ-1 Rainbow, which encompassed the powers of all six ToQgers at once. It is with that form that he and his friends were finally able to defeat Zed and the Shadow Line once and for all.
Enlightened Abilities: Right starts off as a Normal/Fairy Kindred Soul. As a Kindred, Right is able to communicate with Pokemon without messing with the Warp Band very much. It's a very useful ability to have, in his mind, both in battle and on the stage. There's also a good explanation for his typing. The Fairy part is normally associated with playtime and childhood fantasy. Make-believe and Imagination falls right along those lines quite nicely, allowing Right to channel his Imagination in battle via Fairy moves and power-ups. The Normal part reflects his physical limitations - aka, Reality vs Imagination. That's not to say that it's all bad - with the Normal type, Right will gain access to many attacks and power-ups.
Regarding equipment, Right will start with a Fairy-Enhanced longsword that he'll call Rainbow Slasher. The reasoning is that the guard (the piece between the blade and the hilt) is shaped like rainbow-colored fairy wings. He won't start carrying it outside his home, though, until he gets motivated to travel and train outside of Union walls on a regular basis. At the start of the game, he will still be new to wielding an actual weapon, despite years of using props for stage fights and play-pretend battles, so he will clearly need some training in order to wield it to its fullest effect.
Right's abilities and evolution with develop along the lines of his own abilities in canon. He'll start out with a few minor boost moves, such as Work-Up and Helping Hand, as well as a few minor attack moves, such as Quick Attack. His main Fairy move, at this point, will be Fairy Wind, and he'll usually channel that through his blade, Rainbow Slasher, for maximum effect.
His first evolution, at level 25, will highlight his Fairy typing a bit more. His hair will get rather fluffy in the "Hollywood Star" way, and he'll become able to sparkle at will, though his sparkles will be rainbow in coloring. The only other physical change will be him gaining small fairy wings on his back. They'll be translucent, but will have a rainbow sheer to them when hit with daylight. Otherwise, they're only the width of his shoulders, and far too small at this point to be useful. His abilities will be stronger as well, gaining moves such as Crafty Shield and Disarming Voice (a nod to his actor's singing skills). As he gets close to his final evolution, he'll get stronger abilities such as Mega Punch and Metronome. The latter ability will be a nod to the ToQgers' finishing team attack, which can morph into any form of finishing move. (such as a huge fish swallowing the monster, or having the monster be buried in a rock slide, or even slapping the monster to death with a million fan slaps).
His final evolution, though, will have two triggers. First, he has to be at Level 45 or higher. Second, he must also be around a Dark-type Enlightened or Pokemon when he does level up to or above Level 45. When both triggers are available, Right's final evolution will take place, causing a major shift. His typing will switch to Fairy/Dark, in reflection to him gaining the Power of Darkness during the finale arc of his canon series. His skin will fade from his normal coloring to lavender to purple; the coloring will take place from his elbows to his hands, and from his knees to his feet. His wings will grow into full-size fairy wings that will allow him some flight, but it'll have the gradient coloring from purple at the base to lavender in the middle to pink near the edges and tips. He'll gain the moves Shadow Claws and Dark Pulse, and he'll also gain very high-level Fairy moves as well, such as Moonblast and Rough Play. However, due to the unusual mixing of Dark and Fairy, Right will feel rather uncomfortable with it at times, and will most likely need a couple weeks of adjusting to the type change immediately after the final evolution takes place.
Starter Pokémon: Right will start with Wagon the Lilipup (Ultra-Common) and Soft Steel, the Riolu that's off of the Temporary Starter list. Right's nickname for the latter is "Softy", as indicated in the samples below.
Notes/Special Considerations: If Mega-Evolution ever becomes available for the Enlightened during the course of the game, I would like Right to gain the possibility of Mega-Evolving into a pure Fairy-type. This will be a nod to his ToQ #1 Rainbow Form in that he will look very much like a human-sized fairy, with rainbow-colored wings. Any of the previous color grading on his skin will be gone. In his Mega-Evolved form, he'd gain the ability of Pixilate, which will auto-convert the type of non-Fairy abilities into Fairy-type. Imagine a Dragon-type being hit by a Fairy-type Hyper Beam. That kind of potential damage is why I'd prefer Right to only be able to access Pixilate in this form, so as to prevent any god-modding. Granted, I'm aware that it may take a very long time for that to become available, if at all, but it's an option for him that I'd be interested in exploring.
SAMPLES
(NOTE: You may link a previous entry or thread, including testrun or musebox threads (but NOT Dear Mun), for one or both samples. However, we want to see the character in the setting of Brave New World and specifically in their AU for at least one sample.)
First-Person:
Mmmmmm! These are pretty good Poffins! Right, guys? ...Yeah, I like the Oran Berry one, too, Wagon. And don't look at me like that, Softy! There's enough for you, too. See? There you go.
...Y'know what? I've been thinking lately: what would it be like to met one of the gods? I mean, really meet them in person? I know, it might be a little scary at first, but I'm sure they're not really that bad. I mean, what if they're lonely? It seems really lonely to me, doing godly things by themselves. Maybe all they need is a few friends to hang out with. Maybe even a few human friends, too. I mean, they liked the Savior, so why not some of us good humans?
...yeah, that is something to worry about, Softy. What Gigas is doing is wrong. And they need to be stopped. I get why you're worried that the gods would be really, really angry with them about that. But what if the gods just need to see that not all humans are bad? I mean, we here at Union aren't, and I'm sure that's the same at Caldera and the Citadel. We just need to kick Gigas' ass for being evil; that way, the gods will understand--
--Hey, I got an idea! Why don't we make friends with a god or two? Wouldn't that be awesome?! We can show them how wonderful we good humans have been with everything and everyone, and they can help us stop Gigas from doing their evil things! I bet that they got lots of wisdom to impart upon everyone, too. If we all work together as friends - humans, Pokemon, and gods - we can do just about anything we set our minds to! We can make Union - no, the world - a better, more wonderful place!
...why are you guys looking at me like that? It's not like it's a crazy idea or anything like that, right? ...Right?
Third-Person: Here is the testrun thread for Right, with the following questions to supplement just in case.
-What do you look for in the Pokémon with whom you bond?
Someone I can be friends with, of course. They can look like the scariest thing in the world, but they could also be like "I wanna make friends but can't because everyone's scared of me", you know? So, there's that.
-The gods of old have returned. How would you be judged if you were chosen as a representative of humanity?
...Me? Uhhhh...you're sure that it'll only be me? I mean, if I was representing Union, that's not a problem. We've been good to Pokemon, and I'm sure that would make all the gods very happy. But shouldn't there be representatives for all the other groups as well? I mean, there's Caldera, that tree citadel thing, those mole people in that far-away forest... [Right gets prodded by his Riolu, who gives him a look.] Yes, yes...I suppose Gigas counts...but I'm not defending those people. At least, the specific people who have been doing bad. I'd help the gods kick their butts, but not anyone else, because everyone else has probably been treating their Pokemon right and all that stuff...
-A human has attacked a wild Pokémon who retaliates in defense. How do you respond and whom do you defend?
I punch the human, of course! They got no right to be attacking that Pokemon out of the blue! But I make sure that the Pokemon doesn't kill the human, either. Even jerks don't deserve that.
-What would you say is your greatest duty, and why?
To help anyone that needs it. I won't turn my back on anyone that needs a helping hand. Human or Pokemon, it don't matter. If someone needs a helping hand, you give it to them. Plain and simple.
-What strengths make you most qualified for your role within your city?
My Imagination. You needs lots of it in order to be a great actor, because you gotta visualize yourself into that role and that setting. [Right grins very proudly and taps the side of his head.] Thankfully, that's never been a big problem with me, because I always keep clear images in my head whenever I do act or play-pretend. It also helps whenever I have to fight off some bullies, too. I know exactly how I'm gonna kick their asses. [He gets an elbow from his Riolu.] Well...most of the time.
-In your eyes, what is absolutely unforgivable?
[Right immediately grew serious - a drastic change from all the other questions.] Starving people. You just don't do that. Food is Life, and taking someone's food away from them is the worst thing anyone can do.
...okay, so killing people is also terrible, but messing with their food's still just as terrible as that!
